2026 World Cup UEFA Playoffs: Teams, Schedule, Bracket & Format

Sixteen European nations will compete in March 2026 for the final four European places at the FIFA World Cup. With only one team qualifying from each pathway, the UEFA playoff system delivers one of the most pressurised formats in world football. This guide provides a clear, search-optimised breakdown of the teams involved, the full bracket, the schedule, and what to expect from each pathway.

What are the World Cup UEFA Playoffs?

The UEFA playoffs provide 16 European nations with a final opportunity to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Europe has 16 total spots at the tournament. Twelve of those were claimed by group winners during the qualifying stage, which ran from March to November 2025. The remaining four places will be determined through the playoffs in March 2026.

The playoff field includes 12 group runners-up from qualifying, along with four teams that earned their spot via the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League. These 16 nations are divided into four paths, labeled A, B, C, and D, with each path producing a single World Cup qualifier through two knockout rounds.

The playoff draw took place on November 20, 2025, at FIFA headquarters.

2026 World Cup UEFA Playoff Bracket

The draw took place on November 20, 2025 at FIFA headquarters in Zurich. All four paths and every semi-final matchup are confirmed. Each path produces one World Cup qualifier through two single-leg knockout rounds. The home team in each semi-final is the higher-seeded side. Final hosts got decided by a separate draw.

Format and Seeding

The 16 UEFA playoff teams are divided into four independent paths, each containing exactly four teams. Each path produces a single World Cup qualifier, and teams from different paths cannot meet unless both advance to the World Cup itself.

Teams were seeded into four pots based on FIFA rankings from November 2025. In the semi-finals, Pot 1 teams host Pot 4 teams, while Pot 2 teams host Pot 3 teams. For the path finals, a separate draw determines which semi-final winner hosts the match.

Every match follows a straight knockout format: the winner advances, and the loser is eliminated. If a match is level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time is played. Teams are allowed one additional substitution during extra time, for a maximum of six in total. If scores remain tied, the winner is decided by a penalty shootout.

Yellow cards from the qualifying group stage carry over into the semi-finals, but all cards are fully reset before the path finals.

UEFA Playoffs Qualified Teams for the 2026 World Cup

Top Seeds (Pot 1)

🇮🇹 Italy (FIFA Rank 9)

Four-time World Cup champions Italy enter their third consecutive playoff after missing both 2018 and 2022. Their 2025 qualifying campaign began with a 3-0 home loss to Norway in June, ending Luciano Spalletti’s tenure. Gennaro Gattuso took over on June 15, 2025 and guided Italy to secure the playoff spot. Italy drew Northern Ireland national football team for the semi-final and have not lost to them since 1958, keeping a clean sheet in seven meetings since 1961.

🇩🇰 Denmark (FIFA Rank 20)

Denmark reached the Euro 2024 semi-finals and narrowly missed automatic qualification after losing to Scotland on the last day of qualifying. Manager Brian Riemer calls it “lifting the fog of Scotland.” They face North Macedonia national football team at home in Path D and are clear favorites.

🇹🇷 Turkiye (FIFA Rank 26)

Turkiye impressed at Euro 2024 and finished second behind Spain in qualifying. Home advantage against Romania national football team makes them the Path C favorites, with squad depth giving them an edge over opponents in their path.

🇺🇦 Ukraine (FIFA Rank 27)

Ukraine compete while their nation remains at war. They finished second behind France in qualifying. Their semi-final against Sweden national football team will take place in Valencia, Spain as a neutral venue. Team unity and emotional motivation have been key strengths.

Seeded Teams (Pot 2)

🇵🇱 Poland (FIFA Rank 33)

Robert Lewandowski briefly retired from international duty in June 2025 after then-manager Michal Probierz stripped him of the captaincy. Jan Urban took over on July 16, 2025 and Lewandowski returned as captain. Poland finished second behind Portugal in qualifying, and at age 36, this is Lewandowski’s final realistic chance at a World Cup.

🏴 Wales (FIFA Rank 34)

Wales finished second in qualifying and dominated North Macedonia national football team 7-1 in their final game, with captain Harry Wilson scoring a hat-trick. Manager Craig Bellamy called it “as close to the perfect performance as I have seen.” Wales host Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team at Principality Stadium, Cardiff.

🇨🇿 Czechia (FIFA Rank 44)

Czechia finished second behind Switzerland in qualifying. Manager Miroslav Koubek warns that Republic of Ireland national football team punishes teams that give them space. Czechia have won all three previous home meetings against Ireland.

🇸🇰 Slovakia (FIFA Rank 46)

Slovakia finished second behind Germany. Defensive organization is their main strength. They host Kosovo national football team in the semi-final and have a genuine shot at reaching the World Cup if they advance.

Group Runners-Up (Pot 3)

🇦🇱 Albania (FIFA Rank 61)

Albania finished second behind England. Manager Sylvinho said, “Anything can happen in 90 minutes.” Albania are defensively solid, and their matchup against Poland is tighter than the ranking gap suggests.

🇮🇪 Republic of Ireland (FIFA Rank 62)

Ireland earned their playoff spot with a win over Portugal. Manager Heimir Hallgrimsson said the victory gave the team real belief. They face Czechia away but enter with confidence.

🇧🇦 Bosnia and Herzegovina (FIFA Rank 75)

Bosnia finished second behind Croatia and travel to face Wales at Principality Stadium. Previous playoff experience gives them a mental edge in knockout matches.

🇽🇰 Kosovo (FIFA Rank 84)

Kosovo finished second behind England and face Slovakia away. They have shown throughout qualifying that big occasions do not intimidate them.

Nations League Route (Pot 4)

🇸🇪 Sweden (FIFA Rank 40)

Sweden qualified through the Nations League after earning just one point in four qualifying matches. Manager Graham Potter took over in October 2025 after Jon Dahl Tomasson was sacked. Sweden have prior playoff success, including a win over Italy in 2018. However, injuries are a major concern: Alexander Isak and Dejan Kulusevski are sidelined. Viktor Gyökeres at Arsenal is their most dangerous available player. Their semi-final against Ukraine in Valencia is a difficult draw.

🇷🇴 Romania (FIFA Rank 47)

Romania earned a spot through the Nations League despite a higher FIFA ranking than several group runners-up. They face Turkey away in the semi-final and are capable of causing an upset.

🇲🇰 North Macedonia (FIFA Rank 65)

North Macedonia famously beat Italy 1-0 in the 2022 playoffs. Under new manager Goce Sedloski, appointed in December 2025, they face Denmark away. Denmark is a tougher test than Italy in 2022, but North Macedonia’s upset pedigree is real.

🇬🇧 Northern Ireland (FIFA Rank 69)

Northern Ireland qualified via the Nations League after finishing third in their qualifying group. Manager Michael O’Neill said of their semi-final against Italy: “I tend to look at it as an opportunity and that is how we will sell it to the players.” Long odds aside, they earned this stage and have nothing to lose.

UEFA Playoff Pathway Analysis for the 2026 World Cup

Path A: Italy to qualify

Italy received the most favorable draw. Northern Ireland national football team have not beaten them since 1958. In the Path A final, Italy will face either Wales national football team or Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team, both of which are considered beatable. After two consecutive playoff exits, Gennaro Gattuso has a strong chance to finally deliver World Cup qualification.

Path B: Ukraine to qualify

The semi-final between Ukraine national football team and Sweden national football team is the highlight of the playoff round. Sweden face serious injury issues: Alexander Isak is recovering from surgery, and Dejan Kulusevski missed the entire season. Even with Viktor Gyökeres fit, Ukraine’s emotional strength and team unity make them slight favorites. Meanwhile, Poland national football team should handle Albania national football team with Robert Lewandowski leading the line.

Path C: Turkiye to qualify

Turkey national football team host Romania national football team in a semi-final that looks winnable. Romania’s ranking makes the match tighter than it appears, but Turkey’s home crowd is a significant advantage. Slovakia national football team are expected to advance past Kosovo national football team. The Path C winner will enter United States national football team’s Group D at the World Cup, adding intrigue to this bracket.

Path D: Denmark to qualify

Denmark national football team are clear favorites across all paths. North Macedonia national football team have upset pedigree, but Denmark at home is a much tougher challenge than Italy faced in 2022. Republic of Ireland national football team defeated Portugal in qualifying and will challenge Czechia national football team, but Denmark possess the quality to close out the Path D final.
